Being a very proud small business owner myself, I know as well as anybody just how challenging it can be finding success in 2024. Regardless of the industry, this year has been a doozy for entrepreneurs like me and I know this because sooo many of you have told me exactly that. While sadly some of my peers have had to put their dreams of small business success on hold for the time being, others have doubled down hard with their sights being prepared for the future and nothing left to lose.

One hero of mine to come from that latter group is not only the most tenacious woman I know(who has insisted on doing things in business HER way), but is also the woman I am so truly lucky to love. When the going got tough in 2024, @hair_rootedwithwings got going and she hasn’t stopped ever since. Walking out on a limb and launching her own private salon in May of this year required a leap of faith that few were willing to take in these turbulent times. Ever since her feet left that branch though, things are looking up and Kristen’s future in the world of self-employment looks bright.

There’s nobody I support more than my peers and friends who put their dreams on the line with their small businesses. And I’ve helped more of them(than I have fingers and toes to count on) get started with business photo packages so they can hit the ground sprinting in the rat race ahead. So, naturally, Kristen’s new salon deserved that too.

Found by Fresh Thyme on Monroe St. in the @mysalonsuitefranklinpark complex, @hair_rootedwithwings is a one-of-a-kind in Toledo refuge for the Midwest body and soul. Kristen’s unconventional approach to wellness may start with the head, where +30 years of exp. in hair makes her a pro with few equals in NW Ohio. But it’s the mood, the music, the scents, the Reiki, the astrology, and the love that she brings to the experience that make a date with her chair something that all of you ladies should be considering.

I’m so in love with what the woman I love has built. The effort she’s put into her space, her branding, and her experience motivate me every day! So Diet Coke cheers today to you, Kristen Comer. May your chair be as full as you’ve made my life.❤️

Everybody kept asking me yesterday “what’s the deal with the clowns?!?” So today I think I’ll tell y’all the story of the Toledo Distunguished Clown Corps and how I came to be involved with this joyous organization now 3 years ago.

It all started back when yours truly was about to start high school at the end of a past decade lovingly known as the 80s. The former Food Town CEO Wally Iott was tasked with finding a way to re-create Toledo’s Holiday Parade during the Thanksgiving season and discovered the Distinguished Clown Corps in other cities. Wally brought that concept back to the Glass City and soon a bevy of local businesses were sponsoring their own to dress as clowns to spread joy(and candy) along the parade route.

Now almost 35 years after the inception of the Toledo Distunguished Clown Corps, the original 18 participants have ballooned up to over 120 and clowning around downtown has become a beloved pastime to legions of Toledo lovers and leaders. Longtime chairman Bob Savage handed over the clown horns last year to @_hartinc’s Mike Hart, and the future of the clowns looks as bright as ever. At $500 entry per clown and $250 for kids, you can do the math as to how much was raised yesterday with over 120 clowns participating to raise money for some of our favorite area institutions like the @ts4arts.

Big ups today to my friend @benmorales for handing the photographer reins over to yours truly in 2022 and I hope he doesn’t kill me for telling y’all why.😏 While Ben loves Toledo and so many of our neighbors(just like me), Ben is NOT a big fan of clowns lol. Personally, I think they’re just great! So it has been an absolute treat and a true honor to me to be a part of a tradition like this. For that, among many other things, I’m extremely grateful for Ben sending THIS one my way.

Now you know what the deal is with the Toledo Distunguished Clown Corps and I’m happy to have been able to share. Membership is open to anybody who wants to pay or raise the entry cost, and I can guarantee y’all right now that the day I’m done chasing parades down the street with a camera is the day I join up with the clowns. We hope to see more of you out there soon.
